Is he afraid of losing Barbie? The 1993 Ken doll has a re-sculpted face, brown hair that has been dyed blonde and an earring in his left ear. It’s Ken’s first earring.

“It’s a hoop earring, very small,” explained Donna Gibbs, a spokeswoman for El Segundo-based Mattel Inc. “Ken’s a man of the ‘90s. More and more men are finding it acceptable to wear earrings.”

As for Ken’s mug, which debuts next month, Gibbs said he sports “a new face, an updated face. He’s much more handsome. . . . He has higher cheekbones and a nose that’s a bit narrower. His eyes are a little bit wider but they’re still blue.”

Ken, Mr. Perfection himself, seems to be worried about his looks.

“Well,” Gibbs said with a laugh, “he’s in his 32nd year.”

Recession index: The fountain atop the Bunker Hill Steps off Hope Street contained 13 pennies Tuesday morning--and no coins of larger denominations. That’s an increase of three pennies from last week. Most of the coins, incidentally, were out of reach of anyone who didn’t feel like wading in.

Is this what they mean by the underground economy?Robin Turner, a paleontology monitor collecting fossils on the Metro Red Line project for the Natural History Museum, says she was standing “on the construction lot in my boots and hard hat when a homeless man came up to me and asked for some change.”

Turner responded that she didn’t have any coins since “there is no need for money 120 feet underground.” The panhandler (who was not wearing a hard hat) said he “would gladly take a check.”

Asks Turner: “Who knows what’s next? American Express?”

At least it wasn’t Glendale: We mentioned the other day that the makers of the movie “Beauty and the Beast” slipped in a single, barely noticeable frame in which Belle’s father, crazy old Maurice, comes upon a directional sign that lists the villages of Newhall, Valencia and Anaheim.

Here’s another geographical joke, inserted in the cartoon short, “Tummy Trouble.” While visiting his friend Baby Herman at a hospital, Roger Rabbit is mistakenly rushed into surgery. Tied to a gurney, Roger screams as he flashes through doors with such headings as “Pathology,” “Neurology,” “Proctology,” and “Gynecology.” The last door on his terrifying journey is marked: “Burbank.”

miscelLAny:

The Berlin Forest, a two-acre park where visiting mayors of several German cities recently planted trees, is located on the Mt. Hollywood hiking trail above the Griffith Park Observatory. A sign at the park proclaims: “Berlin 6,017 miles.”
