TENNIS ROUNDUP : Chang, Washington Get First-Round Wins

Third-seeded Michael Chang and fifth-seeded MaliVai Washington advanced to the second round of the U.S. Indoor championship Tuesday at the Philadelphia Spectrum.

However, sixth-seeded Francisco Clavet of Spain joined seventh-seeded Brad Gilbert, who lost on Monday, on the upset list.

Chang defeated Emilio Sanchez of Spain, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. Chang broke Sanchez’s serve in the opening game of the third set and served for a lead of 2-0. After Sanchez won the third game, Chang dominated to take four consecutive games for the match.

“I like challenges,” Chang said. “I don’t like to go to places and not play my very best. I have played and come out a little bit short, but my goal is to do better and I want to give an extra effort here.”

Washington defeated Todd Woodbridge of Australia, 6-4, 6-4.

Clavet lost to Mark Woodforde of Australia, 6-1, 6-3.

Matches scheduled for Tuesday night included defending champion Pete Sampras against Simon Youl of Australia.

Sixth-seeded Michael Stich, who will be Germany’s top player in the Davis Cup, defeated Andrei Cherkasov, 7-5, 6-3, to reach the second round of the Eurocard Open at Stuttgart, Germany.

Stich will probably face Cherkasov again when Germany meets Russia in the Davis Cup next month. Germany will be without Boris Becker, who announced he was quitting the Davis Cup team this year to devote his full attention to regaining the No. 1 ranking.

Meanwhile, third-seeded Guy Forget of France defeated Magnus Gustafsson, 6-1, 6-4; Marc Rosset of Switzerland beat Jonas Svensson of Sweden, 7-6, 6-3, and seventh-seeded Wayne Ferreira defeated Arnaud Boetsch of France, who retired because of illness while trailingm 6-3, 1-1.

Monica Seles needed only 55 minutes to get past Claudia Porwik of Germany, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round of the Paris Women’s Open.
