A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who two years ago was convicted of participating in a money-skimming scheme was found guilty again Thursday--this time on charges that he tried to set up a $6-million cocaine deal and flee the country before he could be jailed.

Macario M. (Mack) Duran, who received a four-year sentence in 1991, was convicted this time on a broad range of charges, from tax evasion and theft to the attempted 30-kilogram cocaine deal.

The U.S. District Court jury also convicted his wife and mother-in-law of tax evasion, perjury and lesser offenses connected with Duran’s efforts to hide the money.

Duran plans to appeal the verdict, said Michael J. Treman, his attorney.

Duran 45 is the latest member of the sheriff’s elite narcotics squad to be prosecuted in connection with the far-reaching scandal. Since the case broke in 1989, 15 former narcotics officers and three of their relatives have been convicted on charges that they conspired to steal cash seized from drug traffickers and money launderers.

Duran, who faces a maximum 130 years in prison is, however, the only officer to be simultaneously charged with attempted drug dealing, said Assistant U.S. Attys. Tom Brown and Sally Meloch, who prosecuted the case.

Besides the drug charge, Duran was convicted of stealing $80,000 in seized drug money and then lying with his wife on their income tax returns and mortgage application about the source of the funds, which the Durans used to purchase a $500,000 home in Northridge.

Duran’s wife, Maria, was convicted on the charges of tax evasion, of making false statements on their bank loan and of conspiring to commit perjury.

Her mother, Lilia Vazquez of Van Nuys, was also convicted of perjury for telling a federal grand jury that she had given Duran the down payment for his house.

Sentencing is set for April 14.
