Arts Center Should Reassess Its Role
Kudos to Chris Pasles and The Times for accurately reporting on an issue so important to Orange County (“Vollmer’s O.C. Legacy Imperiled,” Feb. 5).
It is sad to think that the Performing Arts Center may become the force majeure behind the dismantling of the O.C. Philharmonic Society, the group largely responsible for the development of the center.
It is not the role of the Performing Arts Center to be divisive; rather, it should strive to create an atmosphere attractive to artists, impresarios, and audiences.
The executives of the Orange County Performing Arts Center should compare the (Philharmonic Society-sponsored) performance of I Solisti Italiani and flutist Gary Schocker with the previous evening program by the Pacific Symphony.
The need for both organizations is obvious.
A unification of fund-raising efforts might save some money, but it could be a giant regressionunless there is a guarantee of diversified presentations (which is what the O.C. Philharmonic Society does).
