The City Council this week approved nearly $200,000 in grants to a variety of community organizations.

The money, provided through Community Development Block Grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will go to four service groups.

La Habra’s Neighborhood Housing Services will receive $65,000 for its low-interest loan program that helps homeowners repair and maintain their homes.

“These grants are very much needed because the neighborhood needs help,” said Avelina Rosholt, an NHS spokeswoman.

The Gary Center, which offers low-cost child abuse treatment and prevention as well as dental and mental health services, will receive $55,000.

The La Habra Local Development Co. Inc., a nonprofit group staffed by city personnel, will receive $35,000 to help pay its employees’ salaries. The group works with the Small Business Administration in providing loans to small businesses in the city.

A $25,000 grant will go to the Community Resources Care Center for its emergency food, clothing and shelter program for the homeless.

In addition, $8,700 will be used to repave curbs, gutters and wheelchair ramps on Hazel Street between 1st Avenue and La Habra Boulevard.
