School Construction

Share

At the last election the taxpayers voted a total $900 million for the construction of school facilities. Now that the work is about to begin, the Los Angeles school board has taken the disconnected action that raises doubt in the mind of common-sense taxpayers.

The school board has laid off over one-third of the quality control inspectors. These very people were recruited in a nationwide search costing thousands of dollars. The construction branch is one of very few parts of the district that is cost-effective. The resident inspectors required by state law have saved millions of dollars in cost overruns by various contractors and contract designers.

Why, on the eve of the largest construction expenditure in recent history, are we letting the most cost-effective people go? The analogy is simple; you touch the hot stove, you get burned. You lay off the quality control inspectors, your children will be housed in substandard buildings at a higher cost.
