For Chainey Umphrey, there was nothing like coming home Saturday night.

In his first all-around performance at UCLA in more than a year, Umphrey won the event at an 11-team gymnastics invitational before 3,821 in Pauley Pavilion.

Umphrey scored 57.85 points, edging Minnesota’s John Roethlisberger, a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic team and the two-time defending NCAA all-around champion, by 0.15.

“Today, it felt great. It was fun,” Umphrey said.

In 1992, Umphrey sat out the collegiate season because of a stress fracture in a foot. He had placed second at the 1991 U.S. Championships, but at the 1992 U.S. Olympic trials, Umphrey missed the last spot on the team by less than one-tenth of a point.

Umphrey led the UCLA men to the team title at the invitational with a score of 280.15. Minnesota, the defending invitational champion, was second with 277.7. California finished third with 276.9.

The UCLA women easily retained their invitational title with 194.25 points to Arizona State’s 191.35. Cal was third with 184.95.
