President’s Economic Plan

Well, it did not take long for response to Clinton’s speech; the next day two vacuous commentaries, one by Jesse Jackson, on the left seeking greater spending, and another by James Pinkerton, on the right decrying the taxation to reduce the deficit, were making the all too common pitch for their respective constituencies (Commentary, Feb. 18). The real problem is that these commentaries, like most others, offer nothing in the way of specific, real action, constructive criticism.

At least Clinton showed the courage to put his job on the line by offering specifics and challenging the do-nothing Congress to finally do something. Well, I’ve got one more specific: If the oh-so-smart commentators cannot offer specific counterproposals, then they should lay down their pens and get a real job!
