COUNTYWIDE : Youth Conference to Discuss AIDS, HIV

Share

In response to the growing number of human immunodeficiency virus cases among teen-agers nationwide, the Ventura County Department of Alcohol and Drug Abuse will hold a free conference for youth on issues relating to acquired immune deficiency syndrome and HIV.

Organizers hope to attract as many as 300 youths for the conference in Ventura, titled “A Life to Live: An HIV/AIDS Conference for Youth by Youth.” Students from 10 area high schools have been involved in planning all aspects of the event, organizers said.

Many of the student organizers volunteer as peer counselors at their schools or work with local chapters of Friday Night Live, a statewide organization that helps students organize drug- and alcohol-free activities.

Planned activities include a panel of speakers who have tested positive for HIV, a parents-only workshop and a discussion of communication skills regarding sex and HIV.

The conference will be held Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel in Ventura. For more information, call the department’s prevention and intervention centers at 652-7823 in Ventura or 385-1885 in Oxnard.
