Federal Surplus Reported in January: The government had a sizable budget surplus in January, largely because of a bulge in personal income tax payments, the Treasury reported. Overall, the government said it took in $29.81 billion more in January than it spent, a sharp reversal from December, when it spent $38.95 billion more than it took in. Personal income tax payments in January rose to $73.70 billion from $51.17 billion in December.
