IBM Consolidating Some Western Operations: As part of a recently announced voluntary severance program meant to trim 6,000 U.S. employees, IBM will consolidate customer-service operations for its western region--11 western states plus Guam--in San Francisco and Phoenix. Customer-service workers in other western metropolitan areas, including Los Angeles, will be given the choice of accepting the severance package or moving to San Francisco or Phoenix, a spokesman said. The move will probably affect fewer than 100 workers in the Los Angeles area, he said. The affected jobs mainly involve telephone work; maintenance workers and others who visit IBM customers will not be affected.
