Reaction to the resignation announcement of Supervisor Don R. Roth on Tuesday:

“I support Supervisor Roth’s difficult decision to step down. As he pointed out in his statement to the board meeting, it is important for a supervisor to fully concentrate on constituent matters. It is also important for us to have a full five-member board to address the critical issues faced by this county.’

Roger R. Stanton, County Supervisor

“If there is sufficient evidence for criminal charges, the penalty is fines and/or jail, and the penal statutes are not satisfied by (Roth) stepping down from office. There’s more to this case than that.’

Michael R. Capizzi, Orange County Dist. Atty.

“It is with sadness that we say goodby to Supervisor Don Roth, a longtime friend and colleague. . . . He has proven to be an effective and productive leader on this board. His legacy will be that of his lasting contribution to the betterment of the 4th District and, indeed, the entire county of Orange.’

“When Don called me at home last night to advise me of his decision, my heart was heavy. I know how difficult it was for my good friend to make the decision to resign, because I know that, like me, he loves his job. Regardless of the situation surrounding today’s announcement, I am proud to have served with Don Roth, and I am proud to call him my friend.’

Thomas F. Riley, County Supervisor

“Supervisor Roth is the only person who knows his own innocence or guilt. His resignation in the face of charges speaks for itself.’

William R. Mitchell, President of the Orange County chapter of Common Cause

“The word comes as a surprise to me, as I’m sure it is for many. I had no idea things had progressed to this point. I share in the sadness felt by his friends and supporters, who have known the positive side of Don for some years.’

Thomas A. Fuentes, Chairman of the Republican Party of Orange County

“I was concerned that because of all the press, Don had become a liability to the Board of Supervisors in that he felt constrained in not voting for a lot of issues. He is elected to represent the people. Abstaining from so many things was a struggle for him. My personal feeling is that while he may have made mistakes, Don Roth is a man of integrity.’

Allan B. Hughes, Executive vice president of the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce
