If you know what’s going to happen...

If you know what’s going to happen when the moon is in its seventh house, and Jupiter aligns with Mars, beware. You may be dating yourself.

Those who were not part of the ‘60s may not recognize the phenomenon as the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, or lyrics from “Hair,” the American tribal-love rock musical that is being revived by the Cal Poly Pomona department of theatre and dance, beginning Saturday.

“I hope we bill it as a celebration, as well as a memorial,” said the show’s director, Robert L. Gilbert.

A memorial?

But “Hair” is hip. “Hair” is now. “Hair” is 25 years old.

Gilbert, 54, notes with some amusement that the vast majority of his cast weren’t even on the planet when “Hair” was first produced off-Broadway by the New York Shakespeare Festival in 1968.

“They’re essentially the true age (of the characters),” he said.

And being such, some students didn’t recognize as serious a line in which one of the characters ponders choosing to pretend he’s gay, or going to Canada, as a way to escape the military draft. Gilbert said he’s trying to inform the cast “of the poignant conversations between young men at the time.”

The much ballyhooed nude scene will not be deleted from this production.

“By today’s standards, the nudity is very tame,” Gilbert said. “There is no miming of sexual activity. I think our art is much more explicit now. If you look at it in that regard, it’s very tame.”

The play in the University Theater, 3801 W. Temple Ave., starts at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Other performances include 8 p.m. Sunday, 10 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. The final performance will be at 2 p.m. March 7. Tickets are $10.

Peace, baby.
