Elbert Kronick, a philanthropist and volunteer at the Jewish Community Center in Long Beach, has died of cancer. He was 72.

Kronick is credited with helping spearhead a $5-million renovation project that will triple the size of the Jewish Community Center, which serves Long Beach and West Orange County.

Along with his brother, Robert, Kronick donated the first $250,000 to the project in 1990, said Sandi Goldstein, the center’s executive director. Renovation of the center at Willow Street and Grand Avenue is expected to begin before the end of the year, she said. The center will feature a new health club and services for adults and youth.

Kronick, a resident of Huntington Harbor and a retired dentist, served as the Long Beach Community Center president from 1960 to 1962 and as president of the Jewish Federation from 1972 to 1973.

“He was committed to building a society with more social services,” Goldstein said.

His family asks that any donations be made to the renovation project.
