Benefit Raises $150,000 for Menninger School

The Menninger Foundation benefit gala honoring Karl Malden was held Feb. 3 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. Warren Beatty, Kirk Douglas, Eva Marie Saint and Robert Rehme were among the 400 guests congratulating Malden on his William C. Menninger Medal for Leadership. The $150,000 raised will go toward a goal of $250,000 to establish a professorship in the names of Karl and Mona Malden at the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry in Topeka, Kan.

Big Brothers of Greater Los Angeles’ Bachelor Auction at the Regent Beverly Wilshire on Feb. 4 raised $50,000 to benefit services.

The Los Angeles Shanti Foundation “Tribute to Peter Allen” benefit, held Feb. 10 at UCLA’s Royce Hall, netted $245,000. Proceeds will provide free counseling and education to people affected by HIV/AIDS.

United States Committee for United Nations Children’s Fund raised $50,000 at its Dec. 18 and 19 concerts at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Patti Austin, Peabo Bryson, Melissa Manchester and Barry Manilow were among the performers who helped raise money to aid Somalia.

People Assisting the Homeless raised more than $144,000 at its Imaginary Feast, a three-month fund drive that ended Feb. 1. Benefiting are PATH’s day center, transitional shelter residence and building fund.

Hospital of the Good Samaritan has received $51,100 from the hospital guild for the employee child- care center and junior volunteer scholarship fund. The guild raised the money throughout the past year at three fund-raising events.

Five Acres raised $36,000 at its Jan. 23 “Evening of Miracles” benefit honoring L. A. Dodgers pitcher Orel Hershiser. Proceeds will help fund Five Acres’ program for children and families in crisis. Co-chairs were Suzanne Loeb, Carolyn Paula Powers and Margie Eddy-Forbes.

Nechama, a Los Angeles-based AIDS Service, raised $30,000 Dec. 13 at the one-man show “Broadway” starring Don Croll, at the Leo Baeck Temple. Proceeds will provide ongoing counseling and support services to people with AIDS and their loved ones. Phyllis Klein is president. Co-chairs were Jacqueline Sharlin and Renee Cronenwalt.

Westside Center For Independent Living received a $10,000 grant from the S. Mark Taper Foundation Jan. 20. WCIL provides support services, training programs and advocacy to facilitate independent living for disabled people of all ages.

Sebastian International’s “Designing Artists Design for AIDS” fund-raiser Feb. 2 at the Long Beach Terrace Theatre raised $150,000 for AIDS Project Los Angeles. Hairstylists Phyllis Cohen, Frederic Fekkai, Sam McKnight, Bruno Pittini, Oribe and Robert Lobetta were featured in a hair show. A party followed with entertainment by Linda Hopkins, Holly Woodlawn and rapper Doug E. Fresh.

Love Is Feeding Everyone received 52,207 pounds of non-perishable food at a Feb. 9 event co-sponsored by LIFE and the Los Angeles County Chiropractic Society. The HOPE (Helping Other People Eat) Day was assisted by more than 200 chiropractic doctors throughout Los Angeles County who provided complimentary services in exchange for food donations.

Daughters of Charity Foundation raised $300,000 at a Feb. 10 fund-raiser at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. The funds will help support the foundation’s ministries, including St. Francis Medical Center, Our Lady of Talpa School, St. Vincent Medical Center and its Senior Nutrition Meals On Wheels program. Board members Gerry Frawley, Pam Mullin, Verle Pozzo, Jean Trousdale and Loretta Young were sponsors.
