A summary of significant Los Angeles City Hall decisions affecting the Westside in the last week.

CITY COUNCIL TRANSAMERICA PLANS: Approved a proposal by Councilman John Ferraro asking the council to seek ways to prevent Transamerica Life Co. from relocating its life insurance division’s administrative operations--which involves about 650 jobs--away from Los Angeles. Ferraro is requesting that the company “communicate to the council what actions the city could take to convince it to cancel these plans and remain in Los Angeles.”

HOW THEY VOTED

How Westside representatives voted on selected issues. GRAMMY AWARDS: Disapproved a proposal to waive $7,705 for a celebration at the Biltmore Hotel in connection with Wednesday’s Grammy Awards program at the Biltmore Hotel. Some members argued that the entertainment industry could pay for overtime for traffic officers working during the event. Others voiced concerns about using tax money to support a party for the music awards program. Passed: 13-0.

VOTING YES: Marvin Braude, John Ferraro, Ruth Galanter, Nate Holden, Mark Ridley-Thomas and Zev Yaroslavsky. ABSENT: Michael Woo.

VOTING YES: Braude, Ferraro, Galanter, Holden, Ridley-Thomas and Yaroslavsky. ABSENT: Woo. GRAMMY AWARDS III: A day after its initial vote on the issue, the council reversed itself and voted to pay the $16,687 in overtime for the traffic officers working at the Shrine Auditorium for the Grammies. Ridley-Thomas said the council did not want to send the wrong message that the music industry was not wanted in Los Angeles. Passed: 11-2. VOTING YES: Ferraro, Galanter, Ridley-Thomas, Woo and Yaroslavsky. VOTING NO: Braude. ABSENT: Holden. RESEARCH: Approved a proposal for the council to support federal and state legislation that would provide increased funding for breast cancer research. Passed: 11-0. VOTING YES: Braude, Ferraro, Galanter, Holden, Ridley-Thomas and Yaroslavsky. ABSENT: Woo. BOOKS: Approved a proposal that allows the “Connie Martinson Talks Books” program to be aired on the city’s Cityview 35 cable channel. The program, which features interviews with prominent authors, encourages viewers to read and visit their local library. Passed: 11-0. VOTING YES: Braude, Ferraro, Galanter, Holden, Ridley-Thomas and Yaroslavsky. ABSENT: Woo. SETTLEMENT: Approved spending $175,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by the wife of Bernard Rodstein, 81, who was struck by a vehicle in the 1100 block of South Fairfax Avenue. in the Wilshire area July 20, 1986. Rodstein died several months later as a result of his injuries. His widow claimed that police failed to properly investigate the accident and incorrectly reported his death as a result of heart failure. Passed: 14-0. VOTING YES: Braude, Ferraro, Galanter, Holden, Ridley-Thomas and Woo. ABSENT: Yaroslavsky.
