KOREATOWN : Research Center Prepares Riot Report

Share

The Korean American Research Center has announced plans to publish a study on the effect of last spring’s riots on minority families, launch a biannual journal of Korean-American studies and award a summer research graduate fellowship.

The center’s research will help Korean-Americans “define our own image and reflect the diversity of the Korean-American community,” said Edward Park, executive director of the center.

After months of preliminary research and interviews, the center opened this month as a clearinghouse for information on the Korean-American community. The center’s staff and board members will also work with other organizations to push for more social services for Korean-Americans, Park said.

The riot study will include interviews with Korean-Americans, Latinos and African-Americans on how their lives were changed by the events of last spring. The center expects to publish the study before the first anniversary of the riots, which broke out April 29.

The center, at 2426 W. 8th St., is supported by donations. Its board includes scholars, labor and community activists and students.
