Nanny’s Schedule Is Just Like Mom’s

Why do Michael and Michelle Mulrooney and the many like them have children? This question is never answered in the reams of articles on America’s child-care crisis. I understand the day-care crisis for parents who must work for food and shelter, who work to survive. But I don’t understand this.

There are 168 hours in a week. An au pair will take care of the little girls for 85 of those hours.

Why doesn’t it seem to matter that kids like these do almost all of their learning and growing away from their parents? Is child raising some kind of middle-class hobby? Are kids exotic pets?
