TENNIS ROUNDUP : Agassi Wins in Three Sets
Andre Agassi defeated Marcos Ondruska of South Africa, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, Sunday to win the Purex Championships at Scottsdale, Ariz.
Ondruska had beaten seeded players Francisco Clavet, Brad Gilbert and Andrei Chesnokov to reach the final.
“I would have taken a two-set win, but you don’t feel like you deserve a title unless you have to get through some adversity,” said Agassi, who lost only 11 games before the final. “On the way home, I’ll think about what a good week this was.”
Elsewhere, Anders Jarryd of Sweden defeated Karel Novacek of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 7-5, in the final at Rotterdam, Netherlands; and second-seeded Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere of Switzerland won the title at Linz, Austria, when top-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain quit because of flu.
