From Staff and Wire Reports

Rusty Wallace beat Dale Earnhardt to the checkered flag to win the Goodwrench 500 NASCAR Winston Cup race at Rockingham, N.C., Sunday.

Wallace, who won only once in 1992--last September at Richmond, Va.--gave his team, co-owned by Wallace, Roger Penske and Don Miller, a victory in the second race of the Winston Cup season.

“I told everybody at the end of the ’92 season that this team was very tough,” said Wallace, the 1989 Winston Cup champion. “At Daytona, I think we took the car from 34th to second, and here we took it from 10th to first and led a ton of laps. We’re back, we’re strong and we’re going to get the championship this year.”
