VENTURA : Boy With Shotgun Arrested at School

Share

A 17-year-old Ventura High School student has been arrested for possession of a sawed-off shotgun, officials said Tuesday.

The student, whose name was withheld because of his age, was arrested about 1 p.m. Monday at the school after police found the weapon in the trunk of his car during a search of the vehicle. The student was later released to his parents.

Principal Jerry Barshay said the youth has been suspended and that the school is moving forward with plans to expel him from the district.

Barshay said Assistant Principal Robert Beem had questioned the student and a classmate early Monday after hearing rumors about tensions between the two.

He said Beem searched the youths’ lockers and found a shotgun shell in one of them. The principal said Beem called police, who searched the suspect’s car and found the unloaded shotgun in the trunk.

The youth was arrested for possession of a gun and for having a firearm on a school campus.

Police and school officials said they have no reason to believe that the youth is connected to a gang.
