The nation’s first-ever secretary of education will present a keynote speech today to kick off the 14th annual Creative Options Day for Women.

Shirley Mount Hufstedler, a former circuit court judge who served in former President Jimmy Carter’s Cabinet, is scheduled to address more than 800 women from around Ventura County at 9 a.m. in Cal Lutheran University’s auditorium. Her speech will set the stage for a day of workshops sponsored by the Thousand Oaks branch of the American Assn. of University Women and the Cal Lutheran Women’s Resource Center.

Local artists, writers, lawyers, image consultants and physicians will lead the 80-minute workshops, which will touch on more than 60 different topics. From networking to traveling to estate planning, participants will learn how to set and achieve new goals, organizers said.
