EAST LOS ANGELES : Latino Center at Cal State L.A.
Cal State Los Angeles has opened a Chicano/Latino Student Resource Center that aims to provide information and tutoring services to the most populous student group on campus.
The center, in the student union, consists of a pair of offices on the fourth floor. Organizers are setting up computers and soliciting donations of books, videos, magazines, office supplies and furniture.
“We want to enhance the university,” said student Sandra Gonzalez, who has worked on creating the center for two years. “I see this center as a center of mass communications.”
The college has resource centers for women, Asian-Americans and last year opened one for African-American students. There is also a dance resource center.
Latino students make up 37.1% of the campus’ 16,000 students, according to the university’s statistics.
Students hope to start a mentor program with the Mexican-American Alumni Assn. to help students enter their professions. They also plan a Chicano Youth Conference to recruit from local high schools.
