Montreal Expo reliever John Wetteland broke his right big toe when he kicked a batting practice screen in anger Saturday and will not be able to pitch for six weeks.

Wetteland, third in the National League with 37 saves last season, will not be ready by opening day.

Wetteland was pitching batting practice for the first time this spring when the injury occurred. After throwing a pitch that he did not like, he stepped forward and kicked the metal-and-mesh screen that protects pitchers.

“That was the first time I’ve gotten so upset that I’ve actually hurt myself,” he said. “Even back in my angry periods, I never did anything that would hurt me physically.”

The 7,726 who jammed Tucson’s Hi Corbett Field for the Colorado Rockies’ first-ever exhibition experienced sun, fun and something most of them didn’t really expect, a 7-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

“It was a very special day for everybody,” Rocky Manager Don Baylor said. “Our team took it seriously--you could tell in the clubhouse that our guys were ready for a playoff game.”

Tickets valued at $7 were being scalped for as much as $25, and one man paid $45 for a $4 seat.

Benito Santiago used his first spring training appearance to show his new Florida Marlin teammates, not to mention the Cleveland Indians, why he is a four-time All-Star catcher. He picked off two runners in the Marlins’ 9-3 victory over Cleveland at Homestead, Fla.

Santiago caught Kenny Lofton trying to steal second base and picked Albert Belle off first.

“If they didn’t know, they know now,” Santiago said.

Chicago’s Bo Jackson, playing first base, made three errors during the third inning, helping Texas to a 6-2 victory over the White Sox.

In a sacrifice situation, Donald Harris bunted down the first-base line, where Jackson fielded the ball but dropped it before making the tag.

Then, with the bases loaded, David Hulse hit a grounder that Jackson knocked into foul territory, allowing two runners to score. Harris came all the way around on Jackson’s errant throw to the plate.

Kansas City right fielder Felix Jose has a sore left shoulder and was held out of the Royals’ exhibition game against Detroit. Jose aggravated the shoulder while swinging at a high, outside pitch Friday during the Royals’ exhibition opener. . . . Gregg Jefferies, who was traded for Jose, delivered a tiebreaking double in his debut for St. Louis as the Cardinals beat the Baltimore Orioles, 4-1. . . . Roger Clemens started the Boston Red Sox to a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins with three hitless innings.
