A freeway accident in North Hollywood, which apparently involved a drunk driver and several cars, left five people injured late Sunday, two of them critically, authorities said.

Two cars flipped over in the pileup, which initial reports said involved eight or nine vehicles, California Highway Patrol officials said. The accident occurred about 9 p.m. on the northbound Hollywood Freeway just south of Roscoe Boulevard.

Two people were critically injured and were taken to Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Mike Little said. Three others were taken to Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program in Panorama City, and the extent of their injuries was unknown. Authorities could not provide the identities of those involved in the accident.

A pregnant woman was reported experiencing pain after the accident, which also appeared to involve some children, CHP officials said.

Authorities issued a SigAlert after the crash and closed down two lanes of the freeway.
