Riddick Bowe will defend his heavyweight title Sept. 10 against Evander Holyfield, if both fighters get through tuneup fights, Bowe’s manager, Rock Newman, said Sunday.

The fight in Las Vegas would be a rematch of their Nov. 13, 1992, meeting, in which Bowe took a unanimous decision to win the undisputed heavyweight title.

Rich Rose, president of sports at Caesars Palace, said Bowe will defend the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Assn. titles sometime in May, with Jesse Ferguson and Alex Garcia listed as possible opponents. In June, Holyfield, who hasn’t fought since sustaining his only professional defeat against Bowe, would fight, “preferably someone in the top 10,” according to manager Shelly Finkel.

Garcia and Ferguson also have been mentioned as possible opponents.

Washington, Atlantic City, N.J., or Portland, Ore., were reportedly the likely sites for Bowe’s May fight.

Since winning the title from Holyfield, Bowe has defended it once, scoring a first-round knockout over Michael Dokes at Madison Square Garden last month.

Newman laid out his plans at a midtown New York hotel, while elsewhere in New York Don King introduced plans to have Lennox Lewis, the World Boxing Council champion, and Tony Tucker fight on May 8; and Pernell Whitaker, who beat Buddy McGirt on Saturday night, and Julio Cesar Chavez to fight on Sept. 9.
