From Times Staff and Wire Reports

President Suharto, Indonesia’s iron ruler for the past 27 years, was reelected for a new five-year term. His election, a foregone conclusion, was agreed to by the 1,000-member People’s Consultative Assembly without a vote. As with each of the past elections since he rose to power in 1965, the retired general was unopposed for the post. There had been no doubt over the election of the 71-year-old Suharto after the main political groups, including the ruling Golkar party and the powerful military, gave him their support earlier this year.
