THOUSAND OAKS : Trail Volunteers to Get Down and Dirty

Share

Every time she battles weeds on Conejo Valley trails, Ginny Bowers inevitably returns home with a raging rash of poison ivy.

But her susceptibility to itchy welts hasn’t deterred Bowers from organizing the third annual Conejo Open Space Trail Work Day, scheduled for April 3 from 9 a.m. to noon.

About 200 volunteers will fan out across the Los Robles trail system in Thousand Oaks, hacking away weeds, picking up trash and installing low barriers to control erosion. Because of last month’s heavy rains, the trails need extensive repair and some require rerouting, said Bowers, a member of the Conejo Open Space Trails Advisory Committee.

A free pancake breakfast will fortify volunteers before they head for the hills, accompanied by park rangers and first aid experts. Trail repair crews will meet at Moorpark Road and Greenmeadow Avenue at 7 a.m. for the pancakes and 9 a.m. for the dirty work.

Bowers has also scheduled trail workdays for June 5 and Oct. 16. For more information, call 496-2464.
