Exiled President Jean-Bertrand Aristide of Haiti calls on President Clinton today to press his appeal for U.S. help in restoring him to power on the impoverished Caribbean island.
It is the first meeting between Aristide, ousted by the military in September, 1991, and a U.S. President. Although former President George Bush also gave rhetorical support to Aristide’s case, there have been persistent rumors that the former Administration was at best lukewarm toward Aristide.
As the only popularly elected president in Haitian history, Aristide believes he is entitled to U.S. support. At the same time, U.S. officials believe that if Aristide regains power in Haiti, it would stem the flow of potential refugees from the island.
