NBC President Robert Wright has talked with Cable News Network President Tom Johnson and TV journalist Bill Moyers about the presidency of NBC News, network sources in New York said Tuesday.

Reports earlier in the day had Jack Welch, chairman of General Electric, NBC’s parent, also discussing the job with ABC News President Roone Arledge.

Johnson, former publisher of the Los Angeles Times, is said to be happy in his job as head of CNN and not inclined to take the NBC job. Arledge is also considered unlikely to jump ship.

Moyers, the producer and host of numerous series for the Public Broadcasting Service and a former newspaper publisher and CBS commentator, was said by sources to be high on the list of desirable candidates. His interest in the job is not known.

Wright has been meeting with a number of well-known journalists to replace Michael Gartner. Gartner resigned March 2 in the wake of the controversy over “Dateline NBC” having broadcast a staged car-truck crash as part of an investigation of the safety of General Motors trucks.
