A Westlake Village man has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Los Angeles on charges of robbing a Thousand Oaks bank last month, the FBI said Tuesday.
Shane Irwin Mahoney, 20, is accused of robbing the Westlake branch of California Federal Bank on Feb. 5. Information provided by various witnesses, including bank employees, identified Mahoney as a “logical suspect,” FBI agent Charlie Parsons said.
According to a sheriff’s report at the time, the robber entered the bank just before 5 p.m., brandished a large-caliber handgun and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Mahoney turned himself in to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on Feb. 9 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and agreed to return to the United States, Parsons said.
He was taken before a federal magistrate in Seattle and returned to the Los Angeles area to face charges of bank robbery, the FBI said. The indictment was returned last week.
If convicted, Mahoney could face 20 years in federal prison and a fine of $5,000, officials said.
