President Clinton on Wednesday nominated Jean Kennedy Smith, a sister of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) and of the late President John F. Kennedy, as the next U.S. ambassador to Ireland.

Clinton made the St. Patrick’s Day announcement during a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Albert Reynolds.

Smith, 65, is a New York socialite active in the arts. She also is the mother of William Kennedy Smith, who was acquitted of rape in a nationally televised trial in 1991.
