HIGH LIFE: A WEEKLY FORUM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS : Foothill Junior Lands Role on ‘Time to Grow’

Hundreds of hours of volunteer work given by Joshua Goldstein, a Foothill High School junior, have been recognized by producers of “A Time to Grow,” a documentary that began airing Feb. 1 on KOCE-TV.

Goldstein, 17, is one of three teen-agers starring in the 26-part documentary, which focuses on life stages. He was chosen to portray the stage when a young person matures enough to realize he wants to give back to the community, according to Mark Eliot of the Tustin Unified School District. The documentary airs Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on KOCE and will repeat this summer.

During the past two years, Goldstein has devoted after-school and weekend hours to the Red Cross, Eliot said. Each week, Goldstein tutors and organizes activities for children at a Santa Ana homeless center, has participated in the Red Cross toy drive project and, last summer, worked at a Red Cross shelter in Baltimore. He has received the organization’s Golden Circle Award--an honor that usually goes to adults--for his dedication.

The Tustin Board of Education honored Goldstein, along with other students, at its March 8 meeting. Other honorees included Fernando Saldivar, a Tustin High School junior, who was named a semifinalist in the National Hispanic Scholar Awards Program. One of 3,000 Latino students nationwide chosen for the honor, he was selected based on scores in the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last fall.

The Orange County High School of the Arts in Los Alamitos is expanding its pre-professional arts program to offer training in playwriting and screenwriting, video and TV production, choral and opera music and piano instruction.

The screenwriting program will consist of an intensive writing curriculum designed to develop writers for the stage, movies and TV, said spokesman Nancy Egan.

The video and TV program will include production of a bimonthly series, and the choral students will be instructed in musicianship, sight singing, composition and music history, Egan said.
