LOS ANGELES : Council Blocks Demolition of Sheraton-Town House

Share

In a move to save a once-fashionable hotel from the bulldozer, the Los Angeles City Council on Friday overruled a commission’s refusal to grant monument status to the Sheraton-Town House.

The Cultural Affairs Commission’s denial of monument status for the 63-year-old hostelry on Wilshire Boulevard was made Wednesday “despite the extensive information presented . . . supporting the designation,” according to a motion by Councilman Nate Holden, who represents the Wilshire area. The Town House closed last month.

The council voted unanimously to ban demolition of the Town House, located on the decaying Wilshire Corridor, and refer the matter to the Arts, Health and Humanities Committee for further review. The council must take action on the issue within three weeks.
