In 1883, the continent’s first successful ostrich farm sprung up a few miles northwest of town, intent on satisfying the demand for women’s ostrich-feather hats, boas and capes. The odd-looking birds drew flocks of curious people on Sunday outings. . . . The farm did well until the advent of the automobile, whose high speeds made feathers impractical.
