COUNTYWIDE : Women’s History Work Recognized

Share

Three teachers and a community activist will receive awards for emphasizing women’s history in their work during a 2 p.m. ceremony Saturday in the Preus-Brandt Forum at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.

Among those honored is Simi Valley resident Marilyn Cameron, a nurse who doubles as an actress, dressing up in historical garb to portray important women from around the world and across the centuries during brief presentations in local schools.

Also receiving awards will be Carol DiRaimondo, a third-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School in Simi Valley; Marge Misevic, a third- and fourth-grade teacher at Marina West Elementary School in Oxnard, and Linda Brug, a junior high teacher at DeAnza Middle School in Ventura.

Each teacher developed programs to teach women’s history. In Brug’s class, students created a quilt with each square representing a famous woman. DiRaimondo encouraged her students to make puppet caricatures of important women or to tape mock interviews with their heroines.

The ceremony, which includes a tea, costs $5. For more information, contact the commission at 491-0304 or the Women’s Resource Center at 493-3345.
