COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Betzsold, Ferguson Power the Titans Past USC, 9-3

Jim Betzsold homered and Jeff Ferguson had a three-run double as Cal State Fullerton defeated USC, 9-3, in a nonconference baseball game at USC Tuesday night.

The Titans, who are 16-7 and ranked eighth in the nation, broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the third inning. Ferguson’s double was the big blow.

Freshman pitcher Jon Ward of Huntington Beach went 5 1/3 innings for the Titans to post his first collegiate victory.

USC, ranked 11th nationally, fell to 16-13.

In nonconference baseball:

Biola 1, Christ College Irvine 0--Dave Morris scored the winning run for Biola (10-9-1) on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh. Dan Davis two hits and a triple for host CCI (8-14-2).

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 4, Chapman 2--Todd Coburn hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to snap a 2-2 tie for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Chris Briones homered for Chapman.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 4, Christ College Irvine 3 (12, tiebreaker)--SCC pinch runner Jade Barney scored the winning run on a fielder’s choice. Shannon Saylor struck out 12 to earn the victory for SCC (21-6-2, 6-1).
