Doctors said they will keep boxer Sergei Artemiev in an induced coma while his swollen brain heals after a weekend fight in Atlantic City, N.J. They can’t tell yet if he will recover.
Artemiev, who emigrated from Russia three years ago to turn professional, suffered a brain clot and collapsed Sunday night in the 10th round of a bout that had put him in line for a world lightweight title fight.
Continued swelling could cause permanent brain damage or even kill the fighter, Artemiev’s physician said.
