A third-place finish in the giant slalom held at Are, Sweden, was enough to earn Marc Girardelli an unprecedented fifth men’s overall World Cup title. Girardelli is a 29-year-old Austrian native who competes for Luxembourg.

In the competition for the women’s overall title, Katja Seizinger of Germany held off Anita Wachter of Austria to head into today’s final World Cup race, a slalom, with a four-point lead.

Kjetil Andre Aamodt of Norway won the men’s giant slalom for his fourth victory in a row.
