Soggy Ground Fortified at 3rd Calabasas Home

Los Angeles County firefighters Sunday fortified the earth beneath a third Calabasas home threatened by a sliding hillside.

Starting about 4:40 p.m., crews worked for several hours to lodge sandbags and throw plastic tarpaulins over the saturated soil beneath a home in the 23300 block of Valdez Road, Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Kerry Crabtree said.

The measures were taken a day after two other Calabasas homes came in danger of slipping.

Firefighters sandbagged and used tarps to cover the hillside beneath a home in the 3500 block of Pansy Trail starting about 9:20 p.m. Saturday, Crabtree said. The hillside, overlooking Mulholland Highway, threatened to give way, putting the home at risk of going off a cliff.

Earlier Saturday in the same neighborhood, firefighters also attempted to secure the hillside beneath a home in the 3500 block of Elm Drive, Crabtree said.

“Neither one of the houses has moved,” Fire Capt. Roy Burleson said. “The earth moved in both locations, but the houses are still OK. Hopefully, without more water getting in there the slopes will stabilize. . . . We’re concerned about the storms that are still coming.”

No evacuations had been reported by late Sunday.
