Pasadena : $4.2 Million in Cuts Proposed
Faced with a revenue shortfall of $9.3 million in the coming fiscal year, City Manager Philip Hawkey on Tuesday unveiled a package of $4.2 million in proposed budget cuts affecting 19 city departments.
If the proposals are enacted by the City Council, 23 city employees will lose their jobs and another 13 jobs that are now vacant will remain unfilled. There are now 1,900 full-time city employees.
The City Council is expected to vote on the proposals in a special session Monday.
Hardest hit of the city departments would be the Department of Planning, Building and Neighborhood Services, which would lose more than $750,000 and nine positions.
Hawkey proposed no cuts in police officers or firefighters, though the Police Department would lose nine police cadets or police assistants, who perform a variety of civilian tasks.
Hawkey said that, depending on the amount of reductions in municipal revenue ordered by the state Legislature during its own budgetary deliberations, there might be more cuts later in the year.
