Black athletes in the Big Ten graduate at a much lower rate than white athletes, according to a Chicago Tribune survey. Among male and female athletes who were Big Ten freshmen in 1985-86, only 48% of the blacks earned diplomas within six years, compared with 68% of the whites.
Academic advisers and sociologists say there are cultural reasons for the gap in the graduation rate.
