A summary of significant Los Angeles City Hall decisions affecting the Westside in the last week.

CITY COUNCIL

HAMMER EXHIBIT: Approved waiving $2,300 in fees to allow street banners at various locations throughout the city to announce an art exhibit at the Armand Hammer Museum of Art and Cultural Center, 10889 Wilshire Blvd, through May 23. The exhibit, which opened last month, features works by renowned French artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Raoul Dufy and Georges Rouault. Works by Pablo Picasso and other artists are also on display.

UCLA FESTIVAL: Waived $5,306 in fees to permit the installation of banners at various locations to announce the UCLA Mardi Gras, scheduled May 15-16.

SMOKING: Councilwoman Ruth Galanter introduced a proposal to prohibit smoking in several buildings in the Civic Center, including City Hall, City Hall annexes and Parker Center, the police headquarters. Smoking is currently allowed in some areas of those buildings. The smoking ban would minimize potential fire danger in the buildings, which are not equipped with sprinklers, Galanter said.

BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS

WALK OF FAME: Approved adding the name of the late martial arts expert and film star Bruce Lee to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A ceremony is scheduled at 11:30 a.m. April 28 at 6933 Hollywood Blvd. The council must give final approval.

HOW THEY VOTED

How Westside representatives voted on selected issues.

BULLOCK’S: Approved a proposal requesting that R. H. Macy & Co., which owns Bullock’s, reconsider its decision to close the store in the 7th Street Marketplace downtown. The proposal also asks the company if there are any actions the council could take to encourage it to keep the store open. PASSED: 10-0.

VOTING YES: Marvin Braude, Mark Ridley-Thomas, Michael Woo and Zev Yaroslavsky.

ABSENT: Galanter, John Ferraro and Nate Holden.

GRAFFITI: Approved a proposal to support a bill in the Assembly that would allow city or county officials to hold parents or legal guardians of minors found guilty of graffiti vandalism financially responsible for the cost for removing the graffiti. PASSED: 10-0.

VOTING YES: Braude, Ridley-Thomas, Woo and Yaroslavsky.

ABSENT: Galanter, Ferraro and Holden.

COMING UP AT CITY COUNCIL

WALK OF FAME II: On Friday, the council is expected to discuss spending $100,000 to provide sidewalk and landscape maintenance on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

RECOVERY: The council is also expected to continue discussing plans for redeveloping areas hardest hit by last year’s riots.
