LOS ANGELES : U.S. OKs $3 Passenger Fee for Airport Projects
The federal government Thursday authorized the Los Angeles Department of Airports to collect $3 from each departing passenger to pay for a $209-million people mover system and $200 million in other improvements.
The passenger fees will fund a transportation system linking Los Angeles International Airport with airport parking lot C and the planned extension of the Metro Green Line, Transportation Secretary Federico Pena announced. It will be imposed starting June 1 and apply to those flying out of the Los Angeles and Ontario airports.
The announcement was praised by local officials as a development that will bring jobs to the region and help with traffic flow at the nation’s third busiest airport. “This is big news for LAX,” said Rep. Jane Harman.
Other projects receiving money through the fee will be a new $100-million terminal at Ontario airport and $100 million for noise mitigation measures around both airports.
