LAGUNA NIGUEL : City, School District Join to Fix Up Fields
A new partnership between the Capistrano Unified School District and the city of Laguna Niguel will benefit youth athletics by paying for improvements on playing fields at two district schools. On Monday, the district Board of Trustees unanimously approved a plan in which the city will spend its parks and recreation funds to make field improvements at Niguel Hills Intermediate and Crown Valley Elementary schools.
The middle school is already home to Laguna Niguel girl’s softball and the elementary school is home to Rancho Niguel Little League.
Trustee President Marlene Draper said the new partnership is a perfect arrangement because the district is “land rich” but “cash poor.”
In a development agreement reached with Monarch Bay Resorts two months ago, the city of Laguna Niguel will receive $1.46 million to pay for a variety of athletic field improvements throughout the community, including at local school yards, City Manager Tim Casey said.
Recently, the City Council approved a sports field improvement package of recommended projects to “expand and optimize the use of active sports facilities at existing city parks and (school district) properties,” Casey said.
