Gateway Lays Off 14% of Work Force: Gateway Communications Inc., an Irvine-based computer company, Friday said it had laid off 11 employees, or 14% of its work force.

The layoffs were driven by “lower shipment levels and intense price competition” among computer manufacturers, according to a press release issued by the company Friday afternoon.

Gateway, which produces networking and communications systems, also said it anticipated a net loss for the first quarter ended March 31. Gateway said it had yet to determine costs associated with the layoffs.
