SAN FERNANDO VALLEY : Hazardous Waste Roundups Planned

Share

Residents who have unwanted paint, motor oil, pesticides, cleaners or other common household chemicals may safely discard them today at either of two household hazardous-waste roundups, sanitation officials announced.

The Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation will hold one roundup in the parking lot of Rockwell International’s Rocketdyne Division plant at the corner of Victory Boulevard and Canoga Avenue in Canoga Park.

And Los Angeles County sanitation officials will stage a similar roundup at Lockheed Corp. facilities at the corner of Hollywood Way and Valhalla Drive in Burbank.

Both events are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Authorities said the free service allows residents to discard household chemicals that can’t be safely or legally dumped in the trash.

The city-sponsored roundup will be the 33rd staged by the Bureau of Sanitation, which in previous roundups has collected more than 59,000 gallons of paint, nearly 130,000 gallons of motor oil, more than 5,300 auto batteries and 12,243 drums of miscellaneous hazardous waste.

Officials said residents should not mix wastes and limit their material to five gallons or 50 pounds. Ammunition, explosives, infectious waste, compressed gas cylinders and radioactive materials will not be accepted.
