A Ventura resident who is an associate librarian at UC Santa Barbara has been selected by the California Federation of Teachers for its “Women in Education” award.

Sally Willson Weimer was given the honor Sunday at the federation’s conference in Los Angeles. A UCSB librarian since 1976, Weimer also teaches a course in library skills at the school, from which she earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology.

“It’s kind of a cap on my career to be recognized like this,” she said Friday.

Weimer also holds a teaching credential and master’s degree in library science from San Jose State University and a master’s degree in public administration from CSUN.

“I started out to be a teacher and when I found that there weren’t many teaching jobs, I thought, ‘Gee, being a librarian is kind of like being a teacher because you teach people how to use the library,’ ” said Weimer, who has served on the Ventura Library Board since 1979.
