‘Falling Down’: Hollywood Racism

There had been so much talk about “Falling Down” that I had to see it for myself. So I paid my hard-earned $7.50 only to be completely sick to my stomach. Then I read the articles in Calendar in my school library by Park and Kirk Douglas (“My Son Is the Villain, Not the Hero, of Urban Drama,” March 22).

Park took the words right out of my mouth in protesting the film’s unfair portrayal of Korean-Americans. Douglas also had some interesting things to say, but I hardly think D-FENS was the “victim.” It is people like that character who add to the chaotic state of our society. I also found it puzzling that he was proud of his son for playing a “prejudiced, middle-class nerd.”

Wouldn’t it be interesting if those involved with the film were so appalled at the decay of Los Angeles that they took some of the millions the film has grossed and donated it to various organizations around the city? After all, there are other solutions than scapegoating Korean-Americans.
