Japanese Firms in Cellular Phone Project: U.S. Almost 20 Japanese companies will participate in a Motorola Inc. project developing a worldwide cellular telephone network based on satellite relays, Japanese media reported. The network, scheduled to begin operations in 1998, would use 66 low-altitude satellites to link cellular phones. Such a system would allow calls to be made from anywhere in the world. Current cellular systems rely on land links and are effective only in designated areas.
